Levofloxacin is a synthetic broad spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Levofloxacin is the l-isomer of the racemate, ofloxacin, a quinolone antibacterial agent.

Levofloxacin is marketed by Ortho-McNeil under the trade name Levaquin in the United States.

Levaquin uses:

  • Sinusitis
  • Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Nosocomial pneumonia
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Skin and skin structure infections including abscesses, cellulitis, furuncles, impetigo, pyoderma, wound infections, due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Inhalational anthrax (post-exposure) - to reduce the incidence or progression of disease following exposure to aerosolized Bacillus anthracis
Dosage
  • Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
    Adults: 500 mg every 24 h for 7 days.
  • Acute Bacterial Sinusitis
    Adults: 500 mg every 24 h for 10 to 14 days or 750 mg every 24 h for 5 days.
  • Anthrax (inhalational; postexposure)
    Adults: 500 mg every 24 h for 60 days.
  • Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis
    Adults: 500 mg every 24 h for 28 days.
  • Community-Acquired Pneumonia
    Adults: 500 mg every 24 h for 7 to 14 days; or 750 mg every 24 h for 5 days.
