Abuse potential
Carisoprodol may be habit forming. Its abuse potential is related to the formation of meprobamate, the major active metabolite. Meprobamate is a schedule IV controlled substance and common drug of abuse.
The majority of cases of drug abuse, dependence and withdrawal have been reported with prolonged use of carisoprodol (beyond several months of treatment) or in combination with other CNS depressant or psychotropic drugs.
Withdrawal symptoms often include insomnia, anxiety, headache, nausea, and seizure. These symptoms are most likely to develop after abrupt cessation after prolonged use.
Despite the concerns with abuse and dependence, Carisoprodol (marketed in the United States under the brand name Soma) continues to be widely prescribed in America.
Dosage
ADULTS
The usual dosage is one 350 mg tablet, taken 3 times daily and at bedtime.
The maximum daily dose is 1400 mg (4 tablets).
The safety and effectiveness of Carisoprodol have not been established
in children under 12 years of age.
The recommended maximum duration of medicine use is up to three
weeks.
